a pre-modern comic strip for post-modern weirdos by John Haney (c) 2022
I thought it would be nice to make a timeline of my projects since the beginning of time. Here goes.
1977 to 1980
No activity. Couldn't draw.
1980 to 2000
For the first 20 years, I drew lots of things. In fact, the first Astronaut and Camel comic would have been drawn in the early 90's (sadly, I do not have this comic any more). But here is something else I drew from the first 20 years.
2000 to 2011
For about ten years, I drew a series of comics under various titles, but the predominate title for these would have been "John's Adventures." It was about a kid named John who had a Magic Pen (TM) and was able to draw a whole world. Here is a more recent illustration that represents that series. I do not have a comprehensive online archive of these, unfortunately.
Doing stuff online was still kind of new :)
2011 to 2014
Beyond the Dromedary (archived here on this blog) was my attempt to draw a daily comic strip (or semi-daily). For about six months, I was able to get something up on the blog.
2014 to 2017
During this period, I was working on a freelance illustration portfolio. Best place to view would be here:
2017 to 2020
One day, after taking my son to a summer day camp, I got an idea for a series of comics about a summer camp. The camp is based on my own experiences as both a camper and counselor. You can see a complete (more or less) archive here:
2020 to 2022
I worked on a couple of short one-shot comic book ideas during this time. Here is a link to some of those projects:
Among my many comic-making experiments, I've always wondered about the possibility of comics as videos. I was looking through some old comics (from 2005), and remembered this idea for a kid who thought he was a superhero and from another planet. I still like that idea. It's very autobiographical, by the way.
So in the Summer of 2022, I decided to take that idea and make something new. I decided to set the comic in the year 1988. From there, I realized that a Nintendo approach to storytelling would work well.
You can see the first four chapters here...
I recommend viewing them on YouTube. And for the complete playlist (chapters 1-8 available), please use this link:
In 2020, I began experimenting with Beyond the Dromedary with a new look (shock!) and a new platform: Instagram. I never considered adding those comics to this blog (I had largely ignored this site since 2014). So, here is a link to those comics (plus a few other concepts).
